Independent contractors

An independent contractor is someone who does not work regularly for you. Also, you have no control of an independent contractor’s time.

Before you bring an independent contractor on board, be sure he or she completes a w-9. At the end of the year, you have to issue a 1099 if payments are over $600. If you do not get the w-9 upfront, it is very difficult to collect later on.

Keep W-9s for about 7 years.
